Scope of Fashion Designing in India
India is a land of many ethnicities, which brings diversity in the culture and traditions. Being from a country with so many distinct cultures and traditions does give Indian designers an edge over others since they have so many ideas to draw upon.
There is a rise in consciousness about people’s looks and intolerance of different Fashions cultures, which is giving rise to fantastic opportunities for Fashion designers all over the world. Globally, the growth is just as substantial. Here are some numbers to give you an idea of how large the Indian Fashion Industry is before we learn about it.
According to this article about the scope of fashion designing, Indian Fashion Industry currently makes up 13.5% of the whole world’s market. Since 2000, Indian Fashion Industry has grown 2x and is expected to reach a value of 223 billion by the year 2021 from 108 billion. The Fashion Industry is one of the most glamorous, creative, and financially rewarding industries. But it is not as easy as it seems. If you want to be a Fashion Designer, you must get through intense competition and the pressure.
Let us look at the specifics of Fashion Designing and how to become a Fashion Designer. Choosing to work in the fashion industry does not mean you have to be a Fashion Designer. There are other designations that are also as fulfilling as being a Fashion Designer. You have a broad range of options after you gain a degree in Fashion Designing. I am going to explain some of them.
Fashion Illustrator
Designers’ inputs are used to create sketches and illustrations by Fashion Illustrators. The one skill you need to master to be a successful Fashion Illustrator is Drawing/Sketching.
Fashion Stylist
Suppose you have created some great designs, but how do you go about presenting them. Presenting the designs is equally important as creating them and that is where Fashion Stylist comes to play. A Stylist deals with the choice of the appropriate accessories for which kind of designs; what is the best hairstyle to compliment a particular dress, etc. Fashion stylists are responsible for ensuring that our designers’ designs are presented to the public in the most effective way.
Fashion Designer
Fashion Designers basically come up with design ideas which are based on the trends in recent times. However, at times, they also create new trends. Therefore, Fashion Designers are basically the creators and trend setters of the Fashion Industry.
Fashion Consultant
Fashion Consultants have a lot of power to reshape a person’s look, which they use on a regular basis. Fashion Consultants are often exclusive to their clients and look after their image, style in public.
Fashion Co-ordinator
Fashion Director also known as Fashion Coordinator works on designing policies, managing schedules, and arranging events. Being a Fashion Coordinator, you will be more focused on planning fashion events, fashion advertising, fashion research, and other Fashion Marketing aspects than designing clothes.
Fashion Merchandiser
The function of Fashion Merchandiser is to study current and past fashion trends and assist in developing merchandise based on the trends. They do not need to have broad knowledge of all the departments in Fashion Designing, but rather must have a fundamental understanding of all the aspects of fashion designing.
Bridal Designer
Obviously, this one comes with extraordinarily little explanation. Bridal designers are often associated with wedding dresses and brides looks. They work with brides to ensure they look their best on their special day. Making the incredibly special day even better can be an extremely rewarding job if you are a Bridal Designer.
Assistant Designer
Fashion Designer Assistants, as their name suggests, assist Fashion Designers. If you are just starting your career in the Fashion industry, a role as an Assistant Designer to a celebrated fashion designer may give you a huge head start. Your role as an Assistant Designer is to assist a Fashion Designer creatively and practically.
Costume Designer for Film/Theatre
The one that would be most interesting to me would be Costume Design, specifically for Films. It’s all worthwhile when your costumes give a sense of depth to the film’s story. Designers have to learn about the character, the period in which they live, and then design costumes accordingly. Aside from meeting the actors and styling them, the industry involves a great deal of research and a lot of experimentation, which makes the job attractive.
Some honorary mentions: CAD Designer, Fashion Content Developer, Fashion Influencer, Production Designer, Visual Merchandiser, Export House Designer, Sampling Designer, Kids wear Designer, Production Assistant are to name some more.
